The sale started yesterday.Consumers now have a new no-cost option for streaming TV content as popular streaming media platform Plex has today announced the addition of 80+ channels of completely customizable live programming, all of which is now available worldwide for free. 5TB for $90! Great price! USB-powered, Seagate brand. PS- Costco (US) currently has the drives I use on sale. Plex has a Media Server app and Media Player app. I am getting so much out of these $200 + $200 + $75 expenses! Not as convenient, but no big, ultimately. For now the DVR is saved on a local SDD, and I move the files I want forever to another drive manually with my PC. Still, I am usually very happy with my set-up.

Anyway, these three together, HDHomerun + Shield Pro + Plex, are my Media Trifecta. I use it for regular TV now because Google's Live Channels app makes channel surfing fun again.

NVidia is currently experiencing a very terrible upgrade to Android TV 11 on it for now, but otherwise it is an excellent media device. It is a nifty Android TV media streamer with a 256-core GPU included. So I moved my Plex Media Server to run from the NVidia Shield Pro. But I like to tinker, which means PC restarts, etc.
I built my PC then was running Plex Media Server from it.
Plex is a little more complicated and DIY but more economical, too. Remote streaming of what is already on the DVR is fairly simply to set-up. Burning videos and adding DVR was a very cool bonus. So we can share pics and video of their spawn, etc. My objective was to make a central repository for extending family in other states. But I knew that going in, and I appreciate it. Plex is not set it and forget it, it turns out. But it is more a full-on hobby for me to curate the family server. I chose Plex Lifetime because it was a flat $75, on sale. I do not know if it offers Remote Streaming.
That one is $35/year and going to be the most convenient. Some HDHomerun devices come with 1 year free of SiliconDust's DVR service. I don't have much experience with it personally, but I believe it's 100% free and could be another good option if you don't mind a little tinkering. Jellyfin is another open source option that's similar to Emby or Plex. Overall it's also one of the cheapest options since you can get a lifetime license for $120. It's not quite as polished as something like Channels, but it works as advertised and is pretty rock solid. They finally seem to be taking their DVR a bit more seriously over the last month or so, but considering their history, I just can't trust them to continually deliver a working product at this point.Īnother good option you may want to look into is Emby. Their live TV/DVR features have been in a pitiful state for years and they'll leave showstopping bugs for several months (if not years) at a time without even acknowledging them. I definitely cannot recommend Plex, especially if you use Android TV (ie: Nvidia Shield, FireTV, etc). If you want a DVR then I believe you'll need a PC/server to run any option like Channels or Plex. If you just want live TV with no DVR then you do not need a server and you could just get their live TV app for $25 instead of their DVR subscription. It can be worth it though if you use your DVR a lot. Channels is pretty much the gold standard, but it's also the most expensive option with no lifetime license options.
